How To Wear The Pantone 2020 Color Of The Year (And Shop Small)

Every year I wait in anticipation to see what color Pantone will choose as their color of the year (proud design nerd here) and it’s always fun to find ways to work that color into my life. It felt like this year there was extra pressure to choose a great color for 2020, because after all, this is the debut of a new decade!

As far as I’m concerned, Pantone did not disappoint. Turns out the color of the year for 2020 is Classic Blue, and it seems to be a crowd pleaser. After all, we’re talking about the color of blue jeans, the ocean, and one of three colors on the freaking American flag. Feels like a good choice to kick off the 20s.

I usually do some kind of roundup of favorite ways to rock the Pantone color of the year, and this year I thought I’d focus on independent designers and small labels.

The Only 3 Questions You Need To Truly Detox Your Closet

Well it’s officially closet cleanout season again (is it ever not?) and I’m in the midst of the biggest wardrobe overhaul I’ve done in awhile. There’s something about a fresh new year, let alone a fresh decade, that seems to simply demand it.

Exciting though the thought of a fresh closet detox may be, it can be super overwhelming approaching a project like this amidst the capsule wardrobe converts, the Konmari devotees and everything in between. While I definitely love and employ aspects of all of these methods, I also recently wrote about the downside of ‘Tidying Up’ and think that, like anything else, when it comes to closet detoxing it’s something for which you kind of have to make your own rules.

With that said, today I’m sharing what are, in my opinion, the only three questions to you need to ask yourself to truly detox your closet.

How To Just Start Already And Go For It: My Resolution

are you ever totally paralyzed at the idea of starting something that you want or need to do? I’ll always be a Tom Petty fan, and while I do agree that the waiting is hard I must argue that it’s the starting, and not the waiting, that is in fact the hardest part.

today’s post is about how to get started before you’re ready, and why it’s my big resolution this year. I thought a lot about the best way to explain this resolution, and it turns out that the following LA driving metaphor seems necessary:

Reflections On A Decade: 3 Takeaways That Changed My Life

can you believe the roaring 20s are already upon us?! it’s overwhelming to say the least thinking about the start of a new decade, but it’s also incredibly refreshing and exciting to be on the cusp of that clean slate feeling again.

the 2010s were full of some amazing and crazy adventures for me - I traveled the world, played shows in 11 countries, got engaged and married, lived in California, Tennessee, and France, learned to speak French, wrote thousands of songs and met some of my favorite people in the world. It’s been an amazing decade full of a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m grateful for all of them.

As we bid 2019 and the 2010s goodbye today, I wanted to share 3 takeaways from the past decade that have really changed my life over the past ten years.

Kate's Engagement Story

As a lot of you probably know, me and my husband Brett got married years ago- but since we got engaged back before everyone posted every milestone of their lives on social media, I thought it would be fun to share our engagement story with you guys!

Another reason this is a timely post is that I just celebrated my birthday, and we happened to get engaged on my birthday- so it felt like a good time to share this much requested post.

Fast forward to December of 2011, during my birthday week. We were celebrating my birthday down in Cabo San Lucas, and on the morning of my birthday Brett basically told me to pack my bags up at the hotel and that we were going somewhere else for the day. Naturally, this made me somewhat suspicious, but I went with it and jumped into a cab to see where we were headed.

There's No Place Like Home Alone For Winter Wardrobe Inspiration

if you’ve been reading the blog awhile or follow us/me on any form of social media you know that we are entirely obsessed with all things Home Alone, holiday season or not. from the outfits, to the burglars’ excitement about stealing VCRs, to the #tbt labels on all the stuff at the grocery store the movie is basically scene after scene of amazing 90s nostalgia.

while i was watching Home Alone for the first of what will be many times this season over Tgiv last week, i realized that the outfits in the movie offer some serious winter wardrobe inspiration. i’m not sure about you, but between this year’s dad sneakers takeover and the onslaught of late 80’s and early 90’s normcore popping up everywhere, it’s safe to say the McCallisters had serious style.

I Took A Social Media Detox Week And Here's What Happened

ah, social media. it is all at once our loyal BFF and our utter nemesis.

like pretty much everyone else (except that one periphery friend we all have who went back to a flip phone just to out-hipster the rest of us), I find myself falling victim day after day to the siren song that is social media.

it’s kind of impossible not to in modern society, and let’s face it - there are some amazing benefits of the connectivity and community it creates. but now that it’s such a normal part of our daily lives, we pick up the phone (I don’t dare check how many times a day) and scroll incessantly on autopilot without even thinking about it.

29 Things I Learned In 29 Years

Well guys, it’s officially the last year of my 20s.

Your 20s are such formative years, full of exploration, adventures, mistakes, achievements.

I thought when I hit 29, I’d feel bummed that my 20s were coming to an end. I figured I’d have the “time to get serious” mentality that people so often associate with your 30s.

I can honestly say that all I feel at this moment is pure gratitude and excitement. Gratitude that I get to wake up every day and have another chance to connect with people, explore the world, learn, and ultimately, give and receive love. I'm excited for more adventures, lessons, and yes, even change.

Career Advice From You, 20 Years From Now

A career is defined as, "an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress." Sounds pretty standard, right? Well, there's one part of this that sticks out to me as particularly unnerving- "a significant period of a person's life."

I think this is a struggle many 20- and 30-somethings have. And it may even carry on to when we're 40-somethings, 50-somethings, and 60-somethings (it's never too late to start a career!). But I'm here to tell you that there's one thing you need to know about your career, and it has changed my life.

Why I Started Printing My Photos (5 Ideas To Try)

After replacing my phone last week due to yet another phone shattering episode, I glanced at the number of photos on my camera roll to discover that there were - wait for it - 22,375 pictures in there. The photos date back to 2017, but STILL - that number is ridiculous.

This same digital photo overload is what prompted me to start rethinking my photo organization when I first started printing my photos back in 2015. Now that we all pretty much have a super sophisticated camera in our pocket wherever we go, we take a LOT of pictures. and I’m not just talking about the 48 selfies it takes to get a good one (been there). We’re capturing so many aspects of our lives every day, but the question is what on earth do we actually DO with all of them?

How To Be A Dreamer And A Doer At The Same Time

You know what's hard? Taking action.

You know what's easy? Adding to your inspiration board on Pinterest, writing down your goals, talking about your dreams, scrolling through Instagram to look at people who are following their dreams, reading blogs about how to pursue your passion — and the list goes on.

If you're an avid planner like me, before you take action, you have to determine the end-game from the start, consult everyone close to you about whether it’s a good idea or not, create an excel spreadsheet about all the steps you need to take to accomplish your goal, day dream about what life will be like when you do achieve your goal, and then take a nap because you're so exhausted from overthinking.

From Summer To Fall In Button-Front Midi Skirts

we talk a lot about wardrobe staples here at WTD, and lately one of my no-fail favorites is the button-front midi skirt. i fell in love with this style while i was living in Paris last year, where a lot of my favorite French designers seemed to be showcasing their take on this piece for summer.

i quickly discovered that not only did i love the length - long enough to walk up the metro steps without worrying if everyone behind you could see up your skirt but short enough that a cute sneaker or sandal could peek out - but i also loved the button details. you can keep the skirt buttoned top to bottom for polish, or you can unbutton a couple of the lowest buttons to get a casual, breezy look on a hot day.

How To Travel With Just A Carry-On

i used to be the kind of person who had to bring my whole. entire. life. with me when i traveled. anyone else?

no joke, i used to end up checking two bags, going over the weight limit on both, and basically dragging my entire life with me wherever i went. totally exhausting! i finally got sick of the airlines losing my bag and waiting at baggage claim every trip and decided i was gonna be a carry-on only person.

though it definitely takes a little planning in order to really pull it off, i think it’s one of the smartest travel decisions you can make. read on for our top tips on how to travel with just a carry-on!

How To Keep Jewelry Organized On Your Dresser

something i’ve really noticed about myself over the past couple of years is that if there is a blank surface in the house - the coffee table, the kitchen counter, the dining room table etc - it will probably inevitably end up becoming a ‘dump zone.’ just what is a dump zone you ask? a zone where pretty much everything that shouldn’t be there ends up getting dumped. it drives me CRAZY.

when i finally found an apartment with enough room to fit this dresser last year, i knew i wanted it to look beautifully styled but most importantly be functional. since my closet is so small that i actually can’t stand up in it (house tour coming soon with pics), my dresser top is the only sensible spot in the house to store jewelry.

6 Self-Help Books for Dreamers

I never used to be a reader. I’d get bored or distracted easily and quickly and retreat to watching TV or scrolling Instagram (tbh, sometimes I still do). Until I found subject matter that actually interested me, reading seemed like a chore.

Being a “dreamer” my whole life, I have always been curious about habit forming, goal chasing and self care — what tools do I need to perform at my best and battle my resistance to create? When I started reading books about these topics, I became obsessed, and I’m not stopping any time soon!
